Northern Lights

Witness the spectacular Northern Lights and visit the mighty Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss and Gullfoss waterfalls on this 5 day / 4 night Iceland tour (operating December–March).

Day 1: Arrive at Reykjavik, sightseeing and exploring

We start the tour at the hotel in Reykjavik in the early evening. Two of the most striking attractions are the Hallgrimskirkja Church and the Harpa Concert Hall; the nearby old harbour is a great starting point to explore the narrow streets of the old town.

Day 2: Waterfalls, the Skoga Museum, a volcanic beach and a Northern Lights excursion

Driving east along the southern highway, our first stop is Seljalandsfoss, a 60m waterfall you can walk behind. We pass the area affected by the 2010 Eyjafjallajokull eruption, visit the 60m Skogafoss waterfall and the nearby Skoga Museum, then the black volcanic beach at Reynisfjara with its salt caves and basalt columns, before crossing the Myrdalssandur floodplains. Overnight at the Laki hotel, near Kirkjubaejarklaustur. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: Skeidararsandur floodplains, Skaftafell, the Svinafellsjokull glacier, Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon

We cross the Skeidararsandur floodplains and visit the Skaftafell visitor centre, part of Vatnajokull National Park, before a short walk (with crampons and ice axes provided) on the Svinafellsjokull glacier. We continue to the Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon, formed in the 1950s as the glacier retreated, before the roughly 90-minute drive back to the hotel. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4: Eyjafjallajokull volcano, Gullfoss waterfall, the Geysir hot springs, Thingvellir National Park

We visit the powerful Gullfoss waterfall and the Geysir geothermal area, where Strokkur erupts roughly every 5-10 minutes, before finishing at Thingvellir National Park, site of the world's first parliament (930AD) and of the rift valley marking the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 5: Leidarendi lava tube cave, Blue Lagoon, sightseeing, caving and depart

A visit to the Leidarendi lava tube cave, with its lava formations, stalagmites and (in winter) icicles, followed by a soak in the thermal waters of the Blue Lagoon before your return flight. Meals: Breakfast
